Mamelodi Sundowns are on the verge of reclaiming continental dominance as they prepare for a high-stakes CAF Champions League final clash against Egyptian giants, Pyramids FC, on Sunday evening.
After a dramatic 1-1 draw in the first leg, where Lucas Ribeiro put the Brazilians ahead only for Walid El Karti to equalize deep into stoppage time, everything is left to play for in Cairo.
Club chairman Tlhopane “Tlhopie” Motsepe has made the club’s intentions crystal clear—only victory will do.
“We’re not going to Egypt just to compete — we’re going to win,” Motsepe told Sowetan.
“Becoming African champions again is something this club has been chasing. To be just one game away is exactly where we wanted to be at the start of the season.”
Despite the fact that new coach Miguel Cardoso came in without the benefit of a preseason or the ability to handpick his squad, Motsepe praised the squad’s energy and their progression under the new leadership.
“To reach the final with the players he inherited shows how much he’s accomplished in a short time.”
Player Update: Kodisang Struggles, Lunga Extends Stay
While the team eyes silverware, not all has gone smoothly for every squad member. Winger Kobamelo Kodisang, signed from Portuguese side Moreirense in January, has had a frustrating spell at Chloorkop, spending most of his time off the pitch.
Despite a promising resume—14 goals and 8 assists in Portugal—the Rustenburg-born star struggled to break into the matchday squads, casting doubt on his future at the club.
In more positive news, Zimbabwean defender Divine Lunga is staying put. The 30-year-old, who joined Sundowns from Golden Arrows in 2021, is reportedly set to remain with the club for another season, with management opting to extend his stay.
