Orlando Pirates are preparing for a leadership change ahead of the new season as Innocent Maela bids farewell to the club.
Maela featured in his final match for the Buccaneers during Wednesday’s 1-1 home draw against Magesi FC, closing a significant chapter in his career. The 32-year-old defender leaves behind an impressive legacy, having made 208 official appearances for Pirates, scoring six goals and assisting 12 times.
Interim coach Mandla Ncikazi has confirmed that Maela will be moving on to pursue a new path beyond playing football.
Insider reports suggest Maela will remain connected to Pirates in a different capacity, possibly taking up a non-playing role within the club starting next season.
In addition to Maela’s departure, Pirates have also officially confirmed the exit of midfield stalwart Miguel Timm, as previously reported by The South African.
New Leadership to Take the Helm
With Maela’s exit, the captaincy is expected to be handed over to Tapelo Xoki. Xoki has already stepped up as captain during Maela’s absence and is widely seen as the natural successor.
Nkosinathi Sibisi is poised to serve as Xoki’s deputy, continuing the strong leadership presence both players demonstrated when wearing the armband.
Fans and the club alike anticipate that this leadership duo will maintain the standards and drive the team forward in the upcoming season.
