Mamelodi Sundowns have officially triggered the contract extension option for left-back Terrence Mashego, even as Stellenbosch FC steps up their pursuit of the player. This decision comes amid swirling rumors that Mashego is unhappy at Sundowns due to limited playing opportunities.
Since joining the Brazilians in September 2022, the 29-year-old has made 45 appearances in all competitions. However, this season has been challenging for Mashego, who has featured in just 13 matches — a significant drop that reportedly contributed to his omission from the latest Bafana Bafana squad.
Sundowns’ Defensive Depth Pushes Mashego Down the Ranks
Coach Miguel Cardoso appears to favour Aubrey Modiba at left-back, who recently secured his own contract renewal and has appeared 34 times this season. Meanwhile, Divine Lunga, another key defensive option, has also had his deal extended and played in 16 matches across competitions.
With all three players’ contracts renewed, Sundowns are clearly aiming to maintain a strong and experienced defensive unit. Unfortunately for Mashego, this means he has slipped further down the pecking order.
Stellenbosch Target Mashego as Basadien Replacement
Stellenbosch FC are reportedly preparing for the possibility of losing their star left-back Fawaaz Basadien, who is attracting interest from Sundowns. Mashego, originally from Mamelodi, has emerged as their top candidate to fill that potential vacancy.
Sources suggest Mashego is open to the move, especially given the appeal of competing in the CAF Confederation Cup with Stellenbosch.
“When Chiefs thought they couldn’t get Basadien, they were interested in Mashego, but now it seems Stellenbosch have moved ahead in the race,” the source said.
Stellenbosch’s impressive run to the 2025 CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals has boosted their profile, and the club is eager to add experienced players like Mashego to their squad.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Bid Falls Short
Earlier this year, Kaizer Chiefs reportedly made an approach for Mashego, but Sundowns rejected their offer, unwilling to strengthen a direct rival. This closed the door on any potential move to Naturena, leaving Stellenbosch as the leading contender to sign the left-back.
